The principle of "Formula Student" is simple: students from different disciplines design, build and market their own single-seater racing car - and compete each year on major race tracks around the world. The winner is not the team with the fastest car, but the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning.
The university teams act in a similar way to a car manufacturer: first a prototype is developed, which is then expertly evaluated piece by piece for production. The racing car must have very good driving characteristics such as acceleration, braking and aerodynamics - and it should be offered at a reasonable price. In addition, the market value of the car is enhanced by other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and the use of readily available, standard purchase components.
The challenge for the teams is to put together an overall package consisting of a well-constructed racing car and a business plan that best meets the specified criteria. The choice of the right materials is therefore crucial: and this is where our Coroplast Tape and Coroflex business units have been very happy to contribute adhesive tape solutions as well as cables and wires for years.
We take every request seriously - and try to support all teams from German-speaking countries not only with the best products, but also with our special know-how.
Over the last decade, we have equipped around 30 teams - on average between 10 and 15 teams per year. These include, for example, "Elephant Racing" from Bayreuth University, the "Schanzer Racing Team" from Ingolstadt Technical University, the "Elbforace" team from Dresden and the members of "Ecurie Aix" from RWTH Aachen University. But we not only give the teams our best products, we share their passion for the automotive world and see ourselves as a contact and advisor to find the optimal solution, provide the ideal products and give valuable tips.
Understanding how to use the optimal high-voltage cables, especially in racing vehicles, is a particular concern of ours. Time and again, we are available to the engineers of tomorrow as a technical sparring partner and look forward to the exchange of ideas.
It is particularly interesting for us as a market and technology leader to also share knowledge with university students - and to be in exchange with the faculties. In this way, the competition has also adapted strongly over time to the challenges of our time. In addition to Formula Student Combustion (FSC), i.e. the drive class with combustion engine, which will end in 2021, there is now the FCE class, which relies purely on electromobile technology. In addition, there is a category for driverless vehicles, Formula Student Driverless (FSD). These are all developments that we follow closely and set the trends here.
